New Music Releases – March 2020: Pt. 4

New-Music-Releases-1024x732

One last roundup of all the new music that came out in March – compiled with help from our followers! See part 1 here, part 2 here and part 3 here.

I Think You’re Awesome & Taïga String Quartet – Suite to be You and Me (Jaeger Community Music)

postrock-inflected jazz plus strings is a great idea

This is the recording of Suite To Be You And Me by prominent Danish indie-jazzers I Think You’re Awesome and the Berlin-based Taïga String Quartet

Ratgrave – Rock (Black Focus)

a fun blend of Rockit-era Herbie Hancock, Squarepusher, and Nintendo

FACS – Void Moments (Trouble in Mind)

anyone else rate Colossus as their favorite Scorn album? Then check this out!

Astral Travel – If You Say You Are From This Planet, Why Do You Treat It Like You Do? (Hyperjazz Records / Goodfellas)

Dwight Trible & Tommaso Cappellato together on a set inpired by Sun Ra

The Necks – Three (Fish of Milk)

as in three tracks this time instead of their recent practice of one long track, but the sound is still unmistakably theirs

W.R.D. – Judy (Color Red Records)

“Judy” by WRD (ft. Robert Walter, Eddie Roberts, and Adam Deitch) pays homage to classic organ trios combined with 60s British Invasion influences. Composed by organist and keyboard Robert Walter, the Meters-inspired track carries inventive harmonic movement that keeps you on your toes mixed with Eddie’s production vision that harks to early rock band Small Faces. The title is dually inspired by both a nickname for Walters’ girlfriend, Julia, and his love for The Jetsons.

Nick Storring – My Magic Dreams Have Lost Their Spell (Orange Milk Records)

some fantastic records came out yesterday (waxahatchee, cucina povera, nicolas jaar, dua lipa) but this one beats them all ~ rich, fascinating music

For the past six years, Toronto-based composer Nick Storring has been generating a unique body of deeply personal work, painstakingly created by layering his own performances on a wide assortment of acoustic and electromechanical instruments. My Magic Dreams Have Lost Their Spell—a heartfelt, albeit oblique, homage to Roberta Flack—is his frst vinyl release and sees his overdub-rich music taking a lush and nocturnal turn.

Dumama + Kechou – Buffering Juju (Mushroom Hour Half Hour)

buffering juju, the title of dumama + kechou’s debut album, relates to the process of “excavating spiritually charged content from within”.

the duo’s textural sound, driven by cyclical song structures and chant making, not only captures the angst of the modern world but mines this state of affairs for regenerative potential. their approach to music is a coalescence of their respective individual journeys into the self and society, making their sound – described as nomadic future folk music – the sonic result of an organic meditative process.

Lửa – Chlorophyll (Cho Oyu Records)
