Second roundup of new music from January (see pt. 1 here)! Compiled via both our own Twitter feed and MarcissistNR, account run by Marc Masters.
BurningTapes – Black Lake Soundtrack (Burning Witches Records)
BurningTapes brings forth from the lake an eerie score of heavy filtering analogue synths and guitar manipulations in the score to the haunting and demonic 2019 film Black Lake by K/XI. Dripping in glassy cold reverb and abrasive Moog. Prepare for an uneasy listen.
Psychic Graveyard / MSTRKRFT – Dead In Different Places (Skin Graft Records)
Noise Rock pioneers, Eric Paul (Arab On Radar, Chinese Stars, Doomsday Student), Paul Vieira (Chinese Stars, Doomsday Student), and Nathan Joyner (Some Girls, All Leather, Hot Nerds) venture through uncharted territory with their new band, Psychic Graveyard. The band’s debut single, “Dead In Different Places” – set to be released early in 2019 through SKiN GRAFT Records – exemplifies the raw tapestry of sounds that characterize the new endeavor.
Alex Lilly – 2% Milk (Release Me Records) – suggested by Petridisch
Alex Lily knocks it out of the part with this debut album, forging a bold path somewhere between the avenues lain by Laurie Anderson, Madonna, and Lada Gaga. Each song inhabits its own harmonic and metric world, and stands structurally distinct from the others while maintaining the dripping wet instrumental and vocal tropes of the electro-pop genre. – Joel Ford via Amazon
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith – Tides: Music for Meditation and Yoga (Touchtheplants)
Recorded in 2013,Tides is a glimpse into the early phase of what has become Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s signature approach to electronic music. Composed and played on a Buchla Music Easel––the modular synthesizer that gives Smith’s music its organic feel––this collection of instrumentals is at once uplifting, transportive and meditational. It comes as no surprise that it was commissioned by Smith’s mother to accompany her yoga practice.

Sadurn/Ther Split (Dead Definition)
Ther is the moniker of Andi Jones (they/them) and Sadurn is the moniker of Genevieve DeGroot (they/them). Recorded on the winter solstice of 2018 in West Philly, Ther and Sadurn’s split finds the songwriters swapping songwriting duties — Jones taking even numbered tracks with DeGroot filling in the odds. The tape was written in anticipation of their upcoming January tour. – Post-Trash
Sun Araw Trio XIII – Activated Clown (NNA Tapes)
NNA is excited to host the latest recording from S. Araw Trio XIII, a group of musicians dedicated to electronic musical freedom, under the guidance of visionary Los Angeles-based psych-maestro Cameron Stallones, aka Sun Araw. Sun Araw’s recordings have found their home on labels such as Drag City, Not Not Fun, Woodsist, Thrill Jockey, and most recently his own Sun Ark imprint. Joined by Tomo Jacobson and Jon Leland, the Trio XIII is dedicated to improvisational exploration in the live setting, traveling the globe and sharing profound musical connections.
