Rangers is nom de plume of Texan musician Joe Knight whose work runs a gamut from indie/lo-fi/pop rock to all out electronic experimentation. Latter can be heard particularly well in Must Love Dogs!, sound collage Joe submitted for Volume 4 of our Gone in 60 Seconds series.

Back in 2010s hypnagogic pop emerged as a common descriptor of Rangers work, lumping him with the likes of Ariel Pink. 2016 Texas Rock Bottom (self released / Doom Trip Records), a particular favorite of yours truly, could be seen as a pushback against easy categorization with its emphasis on melancholic Americana/pop rock sound.

Fast forward to 2025 and there’s Late Electrics Reimagined. As liner notes state

In 2018 I released a tape called “Late Electrics” on Doom Trip records which you can find on their Bandcamp however it is not connected to mine. For those of you who started to follow my Bandcamp in the past few years you may not be aware that “Late Electrics” exists. I had the files on a hard drive which wasn’t accessible for years until one day voila….I was able to grab them and they were a mess! I decided to re-mix and in some cases re-track these tunes. Some of the changes are subtle and some songs received a pretty big makeover. I always liked the music on this tape. The vocals and lyrics are cringe but for better or worse they propel songs forward that otherwise wouldn’t serve as instrumentals. I had fun fiddling with it so I hope you enjoy checking it out. I am hoping to release new music in 2025, my current project has taken some weird turns.
