Just because Bandcamp Friday is over doesn’t mean that fun (and music recommendations) should stop, right? Here are 8 picks by our follower Dillon (aka freeyourradio), current co-host of Under the Influence podcast!
Take Vibe E.P. – The Take Vibe E.P. (Jazz Room Records)
2020. Full On Lockdown: Musician Laurence Mason puts together this off the wall idea meshing together two of his biggest musical heroes, Dave Greenfield of the tough 1970’s proto-punk band The Stranglers with the oh so cool 1960’s jazz of Dave Brubeck. He puts up his demo on Youtube not really expecting much in the way of feedback. And gets ONE MILLION hits. And hundreds of requests for a release. Jazz Room Records Head Honcho Paul Murphy says “Do you wanna record that and release it?”.”Affirmative!” The result is this grooving Soulful and Funky Jazz version of “Golden Brown”. We’re rush releasing this as when announced we were swamped with requests asking when it will be available.
Cut Chemist – DJ MYSTRO: 1987-1988 Mixes (A Stable Sound)
DJ Mystro 1987-1988 live mixes from turntables straight to cassette.
Carat Black – III (Numero Group)
From Shrine to Stax, Isaac Hayes to Gloria Ann Taylor, The Mad Lads to The Staples Singers, Detroit to Atlanta, Kendrick to Pusha-T, Dale Warren’s singular voice is the lone constant. Beneath the ethereal beauty of his productions was a genius crippled by his unbridled id. His ever-evolving 24-Carat Black project spanned the ’70s, producing a masterpiece and an unfinished follow up. Discovered in a storage space were Warren’s 1980s demos cut with grown n’ sexy divas Princess Hearn, Vicki Gray, and LaRhonda LeGette right before his untimely death at the age of 50. III is an unfinished symphony that peels away the final layer of Dale Warren’s mysterious oeuvre.
Starbirthed – So Long, Green Lodge (Flower Room Recordings)
Starbirthed bid farewell to their longtime home, studio, and workspace with a final live-streamed recording session on March 26, 2020. Green Lodge was the birthplace of both Starbirthed and Flower Room, and as such a uniquely funereal ambiance is draped over the proceedings: a grieving for what’s been lost transformed to gratitude, hope, and trust, processed in real time.
We are pleased to present three edits from the final Green Lodge celebration here as a free / name-your-price download, in hopes that it may help lift your spirits whenever grief is present.
Surprise Chef – All News Is Good News (College Of Knowledge Records)
All News Is Good News is the debut LP from Melbourne instrumental soul band Surprise Chef.
Recorded live to tape over a handful of sessions in the band’s home studio in Melbourne’s inner-northern suburb of Coburg, it traverses the group’s unconventional jazz-funk sound; journeying through cinematic shades of light and dark, tension and release.
Chicago hip-hop producer and visual artist Robert Krums has been making music for nearly two decades, and for most of that time he went by the name Earmint. About five years ago, he reinvented himself as Spectacular Diagnostics. – Chicago Reader
