Los Angeles shoegaze/noise-pop purists Mo Dotti mine the sounds of classic shoegaze, noise-pop, and jangly British guitar bands of yore, such as those described, but what sets them apart is how effortlessly they’re able to draw from each to make something that sounds unique. – Post-Trash
Handing over the mic to artists/musicians who break down their new albums track by track/share the thought process behind the creation. Today we’ll hear from LA’s Mo Dotti whose second EP Guided Imagery is out now.
Loser Smile: This song is in the spirit of “Thorn” by My Bloody Valentine, which has always been one of my favorite songs of theirs. Our friend Joojoo who mixed our record says it also reminded him of “New Music Machine” by Cornelius which is also a song I am obsessed with. “Loser Smile” isn’t really a love song, but I realize now that it sounds like it is. It’s mostly about feeling insecure and dealing with abandonment issues.
Guided Imagery: I wanted to write a song in tribute to San Gabriel Valley legend Hope Sandoval. It’s a ballad with tambourine. A dark pop waltz tinged with LSD.
All Dressed Up In Dreams is one of my favorite songs by The 6ths. I love the desperation in Stephin Merritt’s lyricism. He is a pop genius and I wish we could cover every one of his songs. Mary Timony sings on the original version and I adore her voice. I chose this song because the lyrics are just so perfect: “I was happy, which is not like me at all…”
Hurting Slowly: This is one of our oldest songs. It’s about getting a migraine. It’s very simple structurally, with some eerie qualities. I was trying to channel Trish Keenan when I was writing the lyrics.
Come On Music: This song is our psychedelic freak out with post-punk elements. It’s always tricky to pull off live but it can be very fun to play. The lyrics are about climate change.
Lights On In The Sun: This is also one of our oldest songs, and it was written around the same time as Hurting Slowly. A love song that is also about climate change.
