A slight departure from Callahan’s art-pop direction, No One is classic post-punk in the vein of Joy Division.
If you, dear reader, stuck with IHN through thick and thin, you might remember reissues of Turkish Delight albums we put out – Tommy Bell and Howcha Magowcha. And let us toot our horn for a second there – there’s no shortage of Turkish Delights out there, but this is the only one worth paying attention to, Boston one. Accept no imitation.
Anyhoo. If you like TD, yours truly is happy to report that all of its members are still involved in music! Case in point – Leah, whose latest solo album Curious Tourist came out this April! As Obscure Sound reports
Highlights are numerous throughout. “Super” captures an infectious rock drive with a rollicking appeal reminiscent of Blur, while the previously featured “Ordinary Face” struts a Bronski Beat dance-pop appeal. Another standout is the finale “You Don’t Love Me (No No No),” where piano and orchestral theatrics combine with debonair vocals for a sweltering close to an album full of memorable moments.
Leah isn’t the only member of TD camp on the sampler either! Carl Thien’s led Gull Boy gave us “The Offer” – one where Crazy Horse squeal meets lyrics that tell the story.
“The Offer” can be found on Gull Boy’s self-titled from 2020. Word going around is that GB got a lot more coming down the line…in the meantime you can catch them playing Boston shows and/or tune in into WZBC to hear Gull Window Circus, show hosted by Carl.
Khan Tengri – Ruins
KT is just one of numerous projects/aliases used by Canadian musician Allister Thompson. Bleak lyrics and the 60s production almost make this one sound like a pessimistic response / middle finger to “All Things Must Pass”. Whether this is by design is an open question. We invite everyone to write us back whenever the answer will be revealed.
Matt DeMello – A Tension’s Deficit / All State Firing Squad
Something that was revealed during our recent listening party is that Matt DeMello can’t play the tambourine. Not going to hold it against the man, though and neither should you, because he clearly can play almost every other instrument in the book and also got a serious knack for songwriting. Case in point – his reimagining of Abbey Road, task so gargantuan that I hardly see anyone succeeding at it. Matt did, however, and it seems almost effortless – no small feat, by any means.
Skyjelly – I’m Gonna Take the Day for Granted
A name that probably doesn’t need any special introduction to anyone that followed us through the years. This older outtake, however, might surprise even the people that are familiar with Rick Skyjelly and his work – whatnot with a nod to U2 circa “Achtung Baby”.
Modern Folk Duo Band – Alma As She Is
The Fall have cloned various permutations of rock and roll with their ideas to form a sound which has been described as “Northern Rockabilly” or “Modern Folk” – Charles Neal, Tape Delay
Down take this quote above as an indication that J Moss (aka Modern Folk) or any of his projects bear any semblance sound-wise to Mark E Smith. Where the two might meet, however, is their undying desire to move away from the overwhelming boxiness of rock music. In J’s case that would be manifested through the ceaseless exploration of ambience, drone and fingerpicking/primitive guitar. Over the years his releases appeared on Warhen, Ramble Records and Eiderdown, among other labels.
