Ah, the technology! These days yours truly is rarely inspired by it – the chief problem being lack of human element. But what if…
What if there’s an app that adds an extra sauce to a much beloved ritual of going to shows and seeing live music? Shazam proved to be the answer and took guesswork out of the process of identifying the songs heard between the sets. So without further ado…here’s what was heard at O’Briens in Boston on June 28.
On the Bill
Cathedral Bells – Orlando, Florida’s shoegaze-by-way-of-bedroom-pop Cathedral Bells formed by Matt Messore
Middle Part – Middle Part is a y2k alternative band living in NYC
Video Days – as lofi as lofi gets, with drowned out instrumentation and unintelligible lyrics – RYM
Ex-Hyena – Dark electronic music collaboration between longtime conspirators Reuben Bettsak and Bo Barringer, finding the creative pair crafting dystopian dance music for the inevitable end times
Listen to Spiral Down, track that Ex Hyena contributed to recent IHN sampler!
Shazaming
Pure X – Pure X has always been out of time, eternal—their airy, cavernous sound like sunlight through the waves. Formed in 2009 as a three-piece of Nate Grace, Jesse Jenkins V, and Austin Youngblood called Pure Ecstasy, their early singles, which hit the mainline of shoegaze, soul, doo-wop, and loner Americana, garnered immediate acclaim. Legal issues forced a name change to Pure X, whose bluntness and economy was perhaps more reflective of the band’s ability to cast a spell in under 3 minutes.
Shazamed – Twisted Mirror + Easy
Label(s) – Fire Talk / Fat Possum
Com Truise – Seth Haley, known by his stage name Com Truise, is an American electronic musician and DJ. His stage name is a spoonerism of the name of American actor Tom Cruise.
Shazamed – Air Cal + Cathode Girls
Label(s) – Ghostly International
Gorgonn – Gorgonn describes himself as a Japalien exile. He left the country of his birth almost two decades ago, and since then has been working tirelessly to formulate Jamaican dub, noise, techno, and no-wave into a sound he calls “sci-fi steppas”. If you’ve not come across his name before, there’s a good chance you’ve heard his reverberations.
