Peter Christopherson (a.k.a. “Sleazy”), has died in his sleep on November 24th. He is/was best known for being a member of Throbbing Gristle and Coil, as well as Threshold HouseBoys Choir, his more recent solo project.
It is with great sadness that this morning the Quietus is having to report that Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson of Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, Coil and X-TG has died. He was 55, and reportedly passed away in his sleep. The news was broken in the early hours of the morning by Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti, who tweeted “Our dearest beautiful Sleazy left this mortal coil as he slept in peace last night.words cannot express our grief”. The Throbbing Gristle website simply features Sleazy’s name, and the dates of his life: 1955 – 2010.
Only recently Sleazy had been in London for what will now be Throbbing Gristle’s final ever concert at the Village Underground venue. Read our interview with Sleazy, conducted just a few months ago, here. Our thoughts are with Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter, Genesis P-Orridge, TG’s manager Paul Smith and all Sleazy’s friends and family. – Quietus
Robin “Scanner” Rimbaud contacted the Quietus to pay tribute: “Sleazy was the sweetest gentleman. I remember him telling me after the very first Scanner CD in 1992 that it was the first album he’d listened to all the way through from start to finish in a long time and that really touched me, given that I’d been a TG fan since 1980. We remained friends since then and I will miss him a hollow heart indeed. I hope there’s a hellish handsome angel out there that has kidnapped him for eternal naughtiness.”
David Tibet told Brainwashed:
“Sleaz was one of the kindest, gentlest, funniest and individual people I had ever met. I met him in 1982 as part of the fledgling PTV/TOPY grouping, when Genesis took me round to his house in Chiswick, West London. Geff Rushton had just moved in. Sleazy was incredibly open and welcoming to me. He remained a friend for all these years; he was especially sweet to me when Sebastian Horsely died. Of his remarkable art and utterly individual vision, I must write later.”
David Tibet also made this statement on his own Coptic Cat website:
I am immensely saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of Peter Christopherson early this morning at his home in Bangkok. I am too upset to think clearly of what to write, but I thought I would put up this email that Sleazy sent me 23 June 2010 after Sebastian Horsley went on. Not only does it show Sleaz’s immense kindness, humour, love and generosity of spirit, but what he said about Sebastian’s leaving his body and us also sums up what I would like to say about Sleazy. Peace and Love always to you, beloved Sleaz, now with beloved Jhonn, at play in Æon. I will never forget you and your kindness and your love. I miss you deeply.
