2009 brought out a whole number of new bands and new supergroups to watch out for. Listed below are some of the notable ones:
Risil (MySpace) – Supegroup that features Guillermo Herron (Prefuse 73), Zach Hill (Hella), Tyondai Braxton (Battles), John McEntire (Tortoise), Alejandro Dejeza (School Of Seven Bells) and Eva Puyuelo Muns (Savath & Savalas). They debut – “Non Meters Vol. 1” – came out on Important Records and according to Boomkat catalog “the line-up extends beyond this starry assemblage however, and further volumes in the Risil saga shall involve different sets of players.”
Bygones (MySpace) – A duo of Zach Hill (Hella, Team Sleep, Goon Moon, Nervous Cop, Holy Smokes) and Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos) that released “By-” on Sargent House label. Bygones were described by writer Cory Frye as “a pair of sinewy gents who rock with their caulk guns ready to seal rhythms tighter than the hip pocket of an emo tween.”
Greymachine (MySpace) – Quartet that includes Aaron Turner (Isis, Lotus Eaters, Old Man Gloom), Dave Cochrane (God, Head Of David, Jesu, Sweet Tooth), Dermot Dalton (Cable Regime, Godflesh, Jesu) and Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu, Final). They released their debut EP “Vultures Descend” on Hydra Head and the label also plans to release their full-length “Disconnected” in 2009. Download mp3 for “Vultures Descend” here.
Spinnerette (MySpace) – Band that includes Brody Dalle and Tony Bevilacqua from Distillers, Jack Irons (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Eleven) and Alain Johaness (Queens Of The Stone Age, Eleven). According to Brody Dalle, “Spinnerette isn’t a band, it’s me and whichever musicians I want to work with at the time.” They released their self-titled album in 2009 on Anthem Records.
Kings Of Belgium (MySpace) – Trio that includes Gil Mortio (Attica), Pierre Vervloesem (X-Legged Sally, dEUS, Flat Earth Society) and Al Battor (A Group, dEUS). They released “Unchained Melodies” album on OffLabel Records – it includes material recorded by the band in two days in 2007.
Gay Beast (MySpace) – GB is a trio that represents another generation of bands recording for Skin Graft label. They released their debut “Second Wave” on SG.
This Immortal Coil (Official Page / MySpace) – A project that involves Yael Naim, Bonnie Prince Billy, Yann Tiersen and Matt Elliott (Third Eye Foundation), among others. Their forthcoming album called “The Dark Age Of Love” contains interpretations of such Coil classics as Love Secret Domain, Ostia and Chaostrophy.
Diamond Watch Wrists (MySpace) – A collaboration between Zach Hill (Flossin, Goon Moon, Hella, Holy Smokes, Nervous Cop, Team Sleep) and Scott Herren (Prefuse 73, Savath & Savalas). Their debut album called album “Ice Capped At Both Ends” came out on Warp Records.
Elfin Saddle (MySpace)- ES was founded by visual artists (and real-life partners) Jordan MacKenzie and Emi Honda. Their debut album “Ringing For The Begin Again” came out on Constellation Records.
