Few relationships are easy – the history is littered with songs that describe those that gone horrifically wrong. But boy, oh boy, to call the relationship described in “Get Out of the House” anything but rotten would be a mistake.
For one, the song mentions someone asking neighbors to call a fire department. Now I hope its just a metaphor a-la “Burning Down the House”, but you can never be too sure of that given that vocals are mostly yelled at the top of the lungs.
And speaking of David Byrne – at times vocals almost sound like his monologue from “Once in a Lifetime”. Musically, though, the whole thing is more Residents than Talking Heads – melodic, yet playful, almost approaching dissonance, though never quite ending there.
One can only hope that the couple described in this song made it out alive….
