Rare it is to come across something that is as meticulously crafted as “Live” by Barbara Morgenstern. We had our first taste of that record with a video premiere of “Juist/Poose” – a song that weaves saxophone into the composition in a rather elegant way.
The rest of the “Live” follows the suit – its chock full of little nuances and memorable moments where playfulness (handclaps employed during “Angel’s Whisper”) meets serious business (soaring choirs at the end of the same song). Whereas a lot of modern musicians/composers employ noise, timbre or texture, “Live” relies on a keen sense of melody to carry it along, a distinction that helps to separate it from the pack. A beautiful, moving work that is quite like no other.
