Things We Saw / Things We Missed @ Big Ears 2018: Arto Lindsay

He absorbed those sounds and temporarily set them aside upon returning to New York and launching DNA, a short-lived but essential No Wave band that stunned with its extreme racket. In the decades since, Lindsay has worked to connect the opposing strains of his past, finding power and delight in the juxtaposition of unlikely elements. [/perfectpullquote] DNA mastermind Arto Lindsay played two shows at this year’s Big Ears – one at The Mill and Mine (on Friday, March 23rd) and one at The Standard (Saturday, March 24th) with Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love (Fire Room, Hairy Bones, Lean Left). We missed the Friday show due to Nor’easter/cancelled flights, but made it to Knoxville just in time to see a show at The Standard!

The show was a clear nod to Arto’s no wave roots – a sweaty/noisy exchange between him and PNL, both beautiful and chaotic at that. As our footage demonstrates Arto Lindsay was clearly pleased with the results of said exchange.
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″]Arto Lindsay and Paal Nilssen-Love played together for the first time in Rio in early July 2013 when Nilssen-Love had two nights of concerts at Rio´s avant garde venue Audio Rebel. They met, said hello, and performed a hammering 35-minute set which was all over the place. Highly energetic, with a mix of Brazilian songs, vocals, noisy guitar, and hard beating drums going in and out of time, the gentlemen were soaked in sweat and in the agreement that more had to happen between the two.[/perfectpullquote]
