Skin Graft - A-Z - Flossie & The Unicorns

A-Z of Skin Graft Records – Flossie & The Unicorns

Flossie and The Unicorns sound like furry animals playing dance music on teeny-tiny guitars, eensy-weensy drums, and itty-bitty synthesizers. So simple and perfect, it’s almost frightening. – Album description on Amazon

Oddity among even some of the biggest musical oddities, F&TU (not to confuse with The Unicorns) is the first puppet band (occasionally aided by actual human beings).  So far, FT&U produced a number singles, LPs and CD for labels such as Skin Graft, Hanson and Bulb. Much like some other art/performance projects, Flossie & The Unicorns fall under “love ’em or hate ’em” category, but if you’re into truly bizarre, then you might just something for yourself in their output.
The band consists of lead singer Flossie, drummer/keyboard player Stuffy, vocalist Princess Pandora Stardust and guitarist Snickelfritz (all led by project coordinator Miss Pussycat). Their debut was a self-titled 12″ on Hanson Records, which came out in 1996 (self-described as “sparkling basket of music, stories, and sound effects from Flossie and her friends.”). Same year saw the release of “M.C. Baby / Snow Kitty Machine” on Bulb Records.
This was followed by two full-lengths – 1998 “L.M.N.O.P.” and 2003 “The Animal’s Clubhouse” (both on Skin Graft).  According to All Music Guide L.M.N.O.P “calls for either a semi-bizarre sense of humor or the liberal use of drugs, in the best way that this is possible”, while “Animal’s Clubhouse” is self-described as “More stories about animals starting record labels, ghosts in the tv set, and giant bees who sing songs to make honey. If you must associate with children, then you might want to hurry up and get them into this before something bad happens to their brains.”
