Movie Review / Deadpool & Wolverine

Every comic book fan has been excited about the new Deadpool & Wolverine movie. The merchandise alone has been causing a stir with the release of a Wolverine head popcorn bucket, which is eerily similar to a bucket from the new Dune movie. Marvel knows what its audience has been looking for and is ready to give it to them.

Throughout the film, we see much more of the Merc with a Mouth’s fourth-wall-breaking abilities than with the previous movies. Deadpool and Wolverine work so well together the writers might have pulled them from the pages of a comic. Every little nod toward the audience and not-so-subtle jab at the studio makes me laugh. Since 20th Century Fox was bought by Disney, the Marvel universe can finally include its most famous loudmouth in their collection and bring Logan along for the ride.

Those who stayed in theaters for the end credits of Deadpool 2 will know that Wade Wilson traveled through time, causing many changes to the timeline. This is mentioned in the movie as the TVA brings in Deadpool, but sadly, it has flaws for a film with such a magnificent plot. The TVA would be a fantastic plot point for introducing Deadpool to the MCU. But instead, it is left as a joke. The TVA instead decides to grab Deadpool because he is “special.” With all the potential they missed out on, it left me somewhat disappointed in the theatre, but it was nothing in the end when the rest of the movie was so good.

The writers must have known their Deadpool lore because they introduced some great characters that only a few people know; some less plot-important characters include Headpool, Babypool, and, as you may have seen from the final trailer, Ladypool. Including these characters, as well as many other features, shows me that the writers really did care for their movie. Most of the time, if an audience sees a series coming out with a third film, they guess (often accurately) that it will be bad or at least not live up to the original. But Deadpool and Wolverine isn’t your typical third movie.

Instead of sticking to the tired plot many superhero movies use, we see Deadpool keeping up his streak of originality and watching something completely original, even down to the music. I never thought I would see a fight set to “Like A Prayer” by Madonna, but they somehow make it work in the most epic ways. All in all, Deadpool & Wolverine is a smashing success with all the love and care a superhero movie deserves.
