Compilation Highlight – Whore: Various Artists Play Wire (WMO)

“Whore” is a compilation of Wire covers, which came out on WMO label in 1996. The label itself was not run by members of Wire, but did operate under the band’s approval.
One of the most notable things about compilation is an appearance by My Bloody Valentine – their version of “Map Ref 41°N 93°W” is the only new track that the band released after putting out”Loveless” album in 1991.
As My Little Bubble blog points out:

WHORE is not a “tribute” album in the trite, commercial sense, unlike similar projects before it, although its very nature will inevitably get it pigeonholed as such. The musicians involved don’t give penance to their heroes so much as they offer their own particular spins. A freshness and exuberance prevails in the choice of songs and in the ultimate conditioning. The participants testify to the ideals behind Wire, a group of progressive musicians who not only didn’t play by the rules but invented their own rules and continually expanded the parameters of those rules. This was not just an exercise.

Another curious WMO release is “Dugga Dugga Dugga“, which came out in 1998 and included 14 reinterpretations of Wire’s song “Drill” done by the likes of Malka Spigel and Electric Company.
