Caution Caution Caution – PoMo Trash (Id Records)

Rating: 3/5
And yet another record that defies description.
One word that was used to describe “PoMo Trash” is “skronk” (whatever that means) – but a nice kind of skronk with the cover that pretty much describes the content within (a collage of faces, legs, hands and god knows what else). The record itself is a musical equivalent of its cover – a spicy cocktail of glitch (“Second Guess”),  noise/noise rock (“Newfound”), post-rock (“Second Guess”, “Evening Ugly”,”Lonely Bar”) and  jazz/free improv (“PoMo Trash”, “Incognito”) with all the genres thrown into a blender and mixed thoroughly.
If there’s one gripe that I have with this record is that in attempt to avoid conventions CCC often destroys some of the more melodic tunes (i.e. – “Where We Were”). It often feels like many of those songs would’ve been better had the band decided not to throw in so many changes – I have no doubt that they are virtuoso players, but it often ruins some of the finer moments on “Trash”.
With all that said, “Trash” just could be the first post-impro-jazz record in the world – not exactly an easy listening, but it tries damn hard to please and it succeeds as often as it fails.
Favorites: Second Guess, Newfound, Where We Were, Incognito
