How do you conclude a year like 2020? I’ve already posted my “Best of 2020” compilation, but I wanted to close out the year by focusing on a few record labels that had a substantial impact in 2020. In particular I wanted to focus on I Heart Noise. This episode also features tracks by Raving Pop Blast, Flower Room, Cardinal Fuzz, and Psychedelic Source Records, who managed to put out one last compilation of 2020. Happy new year, everybody. Let’s hope 2021 is better than 2020.

We’re supra-grateful to Todd aka Dead Man Radio for providing an incredible start to our year! Read an interview he conducted with IHN, Skyjelly and Solilians here.

As if that wasn’t enough, the 2020.20 edition of Todd’s podcast The Last Days features a huge chunk of tracks from our label’s catalog! Featured within are also tracks from the vaults of Raving Pop Blast, Flower Room, Cardinal Fuzz, and Psychedelic Source Records.

Time for another episode of Boston Becomes Eclectic – a show/podcast we’re doing in collaboration with Resonance Extra!

As title indicates, BBE is dedicated to all of our favorite music from Boston and New England! Episode 1 was dedicated to Skyjelly while episode 2 collects tracks by Cryostasium, Twink the Toy Piano Band, Marissa Nadler and many more!
Here’s a deeper look at all the artists/tracks we picked for Episode 2

Celebutant – Bread and Games

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″] Celebutant is the singer-songwriter project of Mario Epstein. Armed with a guitar and a knack for songwriting, he aims to determine where the Line of Accessibility is traced in the musical landscape. His major influences influences are Wilco, Talk Talk, and Radiohead. His sound is often compared to the solo works of Frank Black and Thurston Moore.

Gallery 263 [/perfectpullquote] Formerly known as James Discovers, Celebutant is just one of many projects of singer/songwriter Mario Epstein (Drunk Cop / Jorts). “Bread and Games” was written exclusively for Gone in 60 Seconds compilation series.

Cryostasium – Stalwart
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″] Cryostasium, the one-man black metal project led by Cody Maillet, is ultra-prolific. Since 2003, Cryostasium has released over 30 recordings including a split with Xasthur, most of them coming post-2011.  His music combines black metal, dark ambient and industrial sounds.

Decibel Magazine  [/perfectpullquote] Cryostasium is a solo project of Cody Maillet (Bone Ritual / Witch Tomb) active since early 2000s. “Stalwart” can be found on Screaming Bloody Suicide EP (free download, much like a lot of his other material).
More recently Cryostasium released The Possessor LP and last year also saw first release by his dark ambient project The Triangle Theory.

Along – Pastoria
Pastoria is a funk workout that closes out otherwise immensely heavy self-titled EP by Along (aka Jacob Schwartz). Much like many other projects in the mix Jacob recorded under countless aliases (Scrolling, Deoxy, Eu La) with music ranging from metal to ambient to prog rock.

Skyjelly – White Wolves
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″] Skyjelly is there when meteorites crash into the ground. It’s in the trees and the grass. It’s there very early in the morning when most people are asleep in warm houses. What can we do? People change and we’re changing too – changing and dissolving into the air just as you finally see it. We’ll be there again. We always play.
[/perfectpullquote] New material from everyone’s favorite Bos/Prov tape dragons (with video in tow). They’re currently in the processing of releasing new tape via Eggs in Aspic – third overall and what surely will be a nice addition to already hefty discography (Gost Rock on EiA and BP/PEW on Doom Trip Records, both sold out).

Mercy-Choir-224x
Mercy Choir – Friendly Fire

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″]Mercy Choir is the musical project of Paul Belbusti, a person from the New Haven, Connecticut area of the United States of America.[/perfectpullquote] This ominous track comes from last year’s Like a Fountain Stirred. In addition to recording as Mercy Choir, Paul is 1/2 of CT improv duo Rivener.

Daydreamers Club – Heart Science
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″]The album is a practice in electronic concept albums. The concept is trying to find happiness and complacency in a serious and shook-up world post- 9/11. Nirvana, in Buddhism, means center and spiritual happiness. It’s an electronic soundtrack, made with basic instrumental structures.[/perfectpullquote] Minimalist early piece from Chris Bynes (aka blank videotapes / Lightning Pill), your 76th favorite black Aspergian musical polymath (Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, blogger, producer, poet) from Boston.

Solei – Wave Cave
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″]Solei is a painter, looper and symbol seeker living in Somerville, MA with roots from Maine. Both her music and her visual art come from the same source and are created through looping and layering. Loops are ideas in repetition, and repetition is
pattern. Layers are the relationships of different loops to each other. Neurons that fire together, wire together, creating patterns in our awareness that shape our perception of our own reality.
Dorchester Art Project
[/perfectpullquote] Wave Cave can be found on Water Games EP – Solei’s first (and only) official release at this point (she also records with Atlas Lab). Visit her website.

Healers – History of the World Pt. 2
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″] We’re very happy to announce the return of our friend Will from Goat Lightning, The Goat, Earth Tones, and Alosi Den! Healers is a brand new project with lots of exciting tunes to come. Hope you enjoy, and be sure to check out all those other projects, as well.

Ingrown Records [/perfectpullquote]

Consumer – Hymnal
Formerly known as Adjusted Speech, Consumer is a solo project of Jack Williams, 1/2 of Providence-based drone duo Empathy Family.
Hymnal appears on The God Fall album – vinyl reissue of Sleep Transmission LP by EF is also available via Eyemyth Records.

Twink1-x
Twink – Uh Uh Oh
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″]Twink is Mike Langlie, an artist and musical mad scientist living near Boston, MA. One day Mike found an old toy piano in a thrift store and a fun new music project was born.  [/perfectpullquote] Uh Oh Oh comes from Sugar Trip 7″ single, which also includes Fruitbat, a track that Mike originally recorded for Gone in 60 Seconds digital compilation.

Karen Zanes – Friends Are Golden
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″]Karen Zanes is a singer, songwriter and guitarist from the Boston/Cambridge area. In addition to her solo project, she is a contributing member of the experimental / noise/ psych / electronica project, Violet Nox. Other affiliated projects include The Freeways, Ghost Machine Noise, Second Day Venom.   [/perfectpullquote] Friends Are Golden appears on Of Lovers and Tribes LP (Reverb Worship, 2016).
Further Reading: Los Grillos | Terrascope | Atalho de Sons (Shortcut Sounds)

Infinite Room – Concrete
New project of Reuben Bettsak (Guillermo Sexo / Emerald Comets) that was formed after he moved to Atlanta and met Tom Bruno from Sleep Therapy. Rounding out the lineup is Mike Walden
There’s also a guest mix that Reuben did for IHN that everyone is highly recommended to check out. It features music by Blonde Redhead, Broadcast, Spiritualized, King Crimson, Lou Reed, Trans AM and many more!

Petridisch-225x
Petridisch – Cyberia

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″] Petridisch (@petridisch) describes himself as a “mainly Electronic music composer on the Darkwave side, who loves VOCALOID / sometimes plays a reverbed-out guitar” hailing from BostonPetridisch is a mysterious creature, also know as Thor Maillet, who has issued a staggering 26 individual releases, since first launching his project.
Petridisch‘s music is equally influenced by both, the works of Philip Glass and Mylène Farmer, as Thor Maillet says his general intent with his music it to “explore the greyer areas of the psyche with inevitable elements of light and humor.”

The Witzard

[/perfectpullquote] Cyberia comes from Reve d’un Reve, full-length that came out on Norwegian label Asura Revolver. He also released Umjammer tape via Illuminated Paths and Glass: Another Look at Harmony via Pizzabeast Gang more recently.
Further Reading: Metratone | Sunbleach | Badd Press

Marissa Nadler – Katie I Know
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″] Bostonian Marissa Nadler has a voice that drives critics to poetic acts of self-sacrifice. “A voice you would follow straight into Hades,” wrote one. “In mythological times it could have lured men to their deaths at sea,” said another. The critical community would collectively bungee into Krakatoa, it would seem, at the bidding of this will-o’-the-wisp of a trill, equal parts Hope Sandoval, Kate Bush, Lanterns on the Lake and an undead Lana Del Rey. Dark-Sunny-Land-Steve-Painter-225x
Dark Sunny Land – Tire Swing (For CK)
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”15″]Yes, the music of Dark Sunny Land occupies mostly a peculiar heat haze hinterland, a semi-permanent perch that always appears to threaten a massive increase in volume, but never does.

Julian Cope presents Head Heritage
[/perfectpullquote] DSL is a solo project of guitarist Steve Painter that received praise from the likes of Julian Cope and Roger Miller (Mission of Burma). Tire Swing appears on self-released The Midnight Dreamers EP and his previous material appeared on One Hand Records.
Steve also performed Tire Swing as part of IHN Showcase #5 (footage by Karen Zanes / visuals by Rachel Lee).

As mentioned in our previous post, Evol Kween is a co-host of The Antidote (the other host being Ducks Battle Satan) podcast described as

Two music nerds, on opposite sides of Australia, talking about noise and other experimental music.

We’re going to dive into the first 10 episodes to give you a taste of what those two crazy Aussies got in store:

Vatican-Shadow-Ornamented-Walls-297xEpisode 1

The inaugural episode of the Australian noise and experimental music podcast.
This time around your hosts talk about new records from Dominick Fernow’s graveyard techno outfit Vatican Shadow, dreamy sludgemeisters Nadja and Pete Swanson’s abstract guitar collaboration Sarin Smoke.

Pelt-Effigy-xEpisode 2
Second podcast music from around the world that no one else wants to listen to.
This episode Dave and Ingmar chat about Pete Swanson’s ‘Pro-Styles’ (Dave loves it, Ingmar’s not so sure), Mike Shiflet’s absolutely stunning ‘The Choir, The Army’ and the challenging but delightful new record from Pelt called ‘Effigy”.

Treasure-Hunt-Toys-Unatic-194xEpisode 3
Reviews and general chit chat about
The new Kevin Drumm record
A whimsical cassette by a Texan going by the name of Treasure Hunt
A collection of ambient collages based on old Jungle mixes by Lee Gamble

Raime-Quarter-Turns-Over-a-Living-Line-xEpisode 4
It’s the Xmas special! We talk about the Holly Herndon record that Boomkat has been in love with lately, but we weren’t convinced. We also take a listen to the stunning debut full-length from Raime called Quarter Turns over a Living Line, and the confusing collaboration between Daniel Lopatin and Tim Hecker.
