Jenova 7 is nom de plume of Michael J. Sirois – Boston-based filmmaker and musician whose take on instrumental, chilled hip-hop with a cinematic vibe brings to mind the work of Ninja Tune label, Dj Cam, Dj Krush and Portishead.
He has collaborated with French trip-hop producer Hugo Kant and produced instrumentals for Craig G (of the legendary Juice Crew hip-hop collective) and Ohio rapper Copywrite. He is also a member of the enigmatic trip-hop trio Wax Triptych, alongside fellow artists Mononome & Mr. Moods.
Mike is a regular contributor to Boston Not LA series of digital compilation – his tracks Soul For Sale, Love on a Bed of Nails and Heroin for Dilla are scattered throughout all 3 volumes released so far.
His work is also released by Dusted Wax Kingdom netlabel as well as LA-based Cold Busted – latter recently put out a number of compilations featuring J7 tracks.

What is it: last year’s LP from Jenova 7 a.k.a. Michael J. Sirois – Boston musician and filmmaker.

This raw beat tape was discovered in the rubble of the Sector 7 slums… A dusted, grimy and elusive collection of post-apocalyptic trip-hop fashioned in the deepest, darkest parts of the city. The origins of the sounds were lost with the collapse of the city, but the tapes still survive as a relic of those who once dwelt in the abyss. The slums were always derelict. The children dreamt of the scarce beauty of distant lands – a place where pollution hadn’t yet suffocated the last oasis of Gaia.

The layering of phat drums, groovy basslines and addictive jazzy elements is pure genius and brings delightful reminiscences from the supreme years of the oldschool organic samples-based hip-hop.

Clown – Love In Recession
Clown is a solo project Rusty Rabinowitz from Worcester, MA who comments on his debut LP Love In Recession in the following way:

This is what happens when someone stupid enough decides to make an album with resources that go beyond limited. A laptop, Garageband, a drum machine program, and a midi keyboard. Vocals were recorded through the built-in laptop mic.
The spirit of punk lives on.
