Combining synth/funk grooves with rock instrumentation, Trans Am provided soundtracks to the future ever since their inception in the early 90s. Genre-wise, the band is often placed in the same category as Tortoise, UI, Labradford and similar bands.  They also opened for Tortoise in the mid 90s and Tortoise member John McEntire  produced their debut album.
Self-Titled-150x150Although TA formed in the early 90s, it wasn’t until band members graduated from college that the band recorded their selt-titled debut. All Music Guide described it as “big dumb rock of the tongue-in-cheek variety” with plenty of licks inspired by Boston and Foreigner.
1997 brought “Surrender to The Night”, which sounded a lot like “rock’s longtime nemesis, the late-’70s pre-techno Euro-pop of Kraftwerk and New Order.”, according to AMG. 1999 “Futureworld” was described by them as the band’s most diverse and accomplished work yet and a perfect showcase of “the band’s love of retro-futurism and, above all, rock.”
New millennium saw the release of 2000 “The Red Line”, 2004 “Liberation” and 2007 “Sex Change” among other material. The band’s most recent work (as of 2010) is “Thing”, which came out on Thrill Jockey label.
Trans-Am-Thing-150x150AMG commented on “Thing” – “Thing may be Trans Am’s most prog rock-influenced album yet; it comes complete with the majestic fanfare of “Please Wait” as well as plenty of drum solos and spooky atmospheres. Electronic textures that blur the line between eerie and sleazy dominate tracks as far-flung as “Arcadia”’s pretty-yet-creepy dance-punk and the viscous “Bad Vibes,” which boasts squealing and streaking synths that recall the earliest electronic recordings and dark, blobby tones that suggest lava lamps filled with tar.”
In addition to Trans Am, band members also played with Golden and Weird War. Sebastian Thomson also recorded one self-titled album under the moniker Frequency. Trans Am also collaborated with Fucking Champs on multiple releases, including 2001 “Double Exposure” (recorded under the name TransChamps) and 2004 “Gold” (recorded under the name Fucking Am).

Chicago, IL (and currently LA) based Pelican are one of the rising stars in the field of  instrumental rock music (and probably one of the few bands who have a hamburger named after them). The band also shares its member with another (and a very different sounding) outfit called Tusk.

Pelican debuted with a self-titled EP in 2001, followed by a 2003 full-length “Australasia”. According to the band’s guitarist Trevor de Brauw the album’s sessions had to be rushed due to budget restrictions, but the album still received plenty of positive press.
All Music Guide pointed out that “Australasia will likely please most aficionados of Hydra Head’s growing roster of “instru-metal” talents, as well as that subset of indie/post-rock listeners who are interested in metal/hardcore music but tend to dislike the vocals.”
Ground and Sky website commented that its tough to enjoy the record due to “the band’s refusal to stray from a very particular sound.” G&S concluded that is a solidly enjoyable effort, but one overshadowed by the EPs that bookend it.”

Pelican followed its debut with a number of splits,  an EP (2005 “March Into The Sea”) and “The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw” LP (which also came out in 2005). According to the band’s guitarist, the title of their second full-length was meant to confuse people and originally it was called “Black Doom On Tuesday.”

The album ended up on many of best-of lists by the end of 2005 – Decibel Magazine chosen it as one of top 5 albums of the year, while Terrorizer magazine ranked it #35. Blabbermouth commented that “”The music of The Fire in our Throats… not only conjures visions of earth’s explosive creation, but also the blending of pristine beauty with nature’s unforgiving wrath. It’s powerful stuff.” and regarding its heaviness, added, “The one constant here is compositional excellence. Make no mistake though, The Fire in our Throats… is a heavy rock album. The band just paints with more colors and uses a bigger canvas on this one.””

The following years brought more material, including 2007 “City Of Echoes” and the band’s latest effort (as of 2009) – “What We All Come To Need”. The band also produced splits with fellow acts like Young Widows and These Arms Are Snakes.

Pitchfork gave “City” a rating of 4 stars out 10 and commented that ” (Larry) Herweg’s drumming and complete oblivion to feel doesn’t allow Pelican the range to be the exciting, dynamic band that’s capable of the structural complexity they’re interested in here. This makes City of Echoes static and, often, boring. ” However, they also pointed out that “ignoring the rhythm section and its side effects, though, this is the best Pelican album yet, largely because de Brauw and Schroeder-Lebec are only getting better in tandem, increasingly comfortable as complementary foils.”

AMG commented that 2009 “What We All Come To Need” is “a new step for Pelican, one that takes what they do best and turns it on its head without giving it up at all.” Further on, they added that “this is still insanely large-sounding music, and is heavy in the extreme, but its new tenets give listeners more to hold on — and perhaps dream on — than simply low-tuned, ponderous riffing.
Outside of Pelican, drummer Larry Herweg also played with Lair Of The Minotaur (which also included members of 7000 Dying Rats and Sheephead). Trevor De Brauw plays with Teith – a band that also includes Josh Grubman and Lisa Shelley and produced an EP entitled “Oak City” for Migration Media label.
Fun Facts
– Chicago restaurant Kuma’s Corner is serving Pelican Burger, which was named after the band. Some other items on the menu include Pig Destroyer, Hate Beak, Iron Maiden, Slayer and Metallica (see it here).

Bardo is some way out distorto fuzz fest that wants to be yr friend. Not unlike going to hell but taking the safe suburban side streets all the way down. – Bunnyhop

Bardo Pond create dense, multidimensional tapestries of interwoven guitar noise, held in place by a rickety structure of threadbare rock and roll melody. – Splendid E-Zine

Loosely affiliated with “Psychphiladelphia” movement (which also includes bands like Azusa Plane and Lilys), Bardo Pond are a collective of sonic explorers and fearless innovators centered around a trio of brothers John and Michael Gibbons and guitarist Clint Takeda. Their music incorporates white noise, feedback, reverb and droning guitars into the mix that might remind one of New York No Wave scene of the 80s, as well as bands from Krautrock movement/psychedelic bands of the 60s and experimental/adventurous indie bands.

Formed in Philadelphia in the late 80s, initially the band included John and Michael Gibbons and their collaborator Clint Takeda who played improvisational jams in the living room. The band grew from being free-form/noise unit to something more cohesive and finally got a proper name in the early 90s – Bardo Pond – which Clint Takeda took from Tibetian Book Of The Dead.

shonelikeaton_front-150x150
Shone Like A Ton – 1992

The band also added vocalist Isobel Sollenberger and drummer Bob Sentz to the line-up and through the early 90s Bardo Pond produced five self-released cassettes. Eventually,  Sentz quit the band and was replaced by Joe Culver and the band started to get noticed by record lables – Compulsiv label signed them and released their debut single “Die Easy / Apple Eye” in the early ’94. Bardo Pond issued two more singles (both on Drunken Fish label) before releasing their first LP – 1995 “Bufo Alvarius Amen 29:15”.

Named after a hallucinogenic toad, the album came in few different versions – vinyl edition (that was limited to 1000 copies) and a CD version that included nearly 30-minute long jam called “Amen”. Compulsiv also released a collection of leftovers from “Amen” sessions entitled “Big Laughing Jym”.

In their review of “Amen”, All Music Guide noted that “There’s something about the combination of lo-fi crunch, post-shoegaze bliss-out, stoner Quaalude head-nodding, and Loop/Spacemen 3-inspired drone that’s truly unique.” Indie List Digest described the record as the sound of Mazzy Star losing their jobs and giving up / “an aural equivalent of a cough syrup shake”.

amanita_cd-150x150
Amanita – 1996

“Amanita”, named after an Indian hallucinogen, arrived in 1996. AMG described it as “compelling a mix of drone, volume, and blissout” where the band “cranked the amps, switched on the pedals, and let fly with 11 monster songs.” Stanford Daily review pointed out that “record’s charm isn’t in its individual tracks, but in its ability to achieve a remarkable spectrum of moods from its strange, lazy drone. Rather than working with obvious changes in volume or tempo, Bardo Pond explore the dynamics of the hazy middle, uncovering all the intricate and subtly fascinating hooks the place has to offer.”

Next year brought “Lapsed”, a record that is “more potent than liquid lysergic acid”, according to CMJ. Addicted To Noise website described “Lapsed” as “rock at its most abstract level” since “none of the usual rock motives / cliches animate it.” Broken Face magazine pointed out that the record is “disorienting and truly splendid under the proper outside stimuli”.

setandsetting_cd-150x150
Set And Setting – 1999

1999 saw the release of “Set And Setting”, BP’s 3rd record for Matador label. Splendid E-Zine described the record as “the most concise Bardo Pond album to date” with the music “bouncing around angrily at the end of its tether but never breaking free into chaos”. Flak Magazine pointed out that “Bardo Pond cooks up better psychedelic guitar sludge than almost anyone, but this time out, they throw in other discernible stringed sounds, too.” and “The greatest thing about this record is how it flows seamlessly from one end to the other, yet still manages great dynamic shifts.”

New millennium saw the band producing a series of self-released CDrs, all of which came out in limited edition ranging from 100 to 500 copies, as well as a steady stream of singles, EPs, splits and full-lengths, including 2001 “Dilate” and 2003 “On The Ellipse”. 2009 saw the release of not one, but two BP releases at once – vinyl-only “Gazing At Shilla” and another full-length entitled “Peri”.

In addition to their work with Bardo Pond band members are/were involved with numerous side projects and other bands, including Hash Jar Tempo, Baikal, LSD Pond, Prairie Dog Flesh, Dechemia, Third Trol and Alasehir.

Although its not usual to hear rock-n-rollers discuss taboo subjects, Austin, TX-based Crust took obsession with filth to a whole new level, by discussing such themes as head lice, chlamydia and general pain associated with life at the bottom (with their traveling experience serving as a source of inspiration). The band also was known for their weird stage antics and their instruments, which included feedback devices, tape loops and found objects (in addition to regular guitar, bass, keyboard setup).

polypJohn Hawkins, Richard Smith (formerly a drummer for Miracle Room and a member of Bontempi Bros) and Jerry Page started out in ’87 under the name Mud Honey, but later changed their name to Crust in order to avoid confusion with Seattle act of that name. Shortly after their formation, they contributed two tracks to a compilation called “The Polyp Explodes” (on Butterylicious Productions label), which also included tracks by ST37, Ed Hall and Seemen, among others.
r-371274-1112544221In the early 90s, they became a first band to sign to King Coffey’s (Butthole Surfers) label Trance Syndicate Records.  They went on to produce numerous CDs and LPs for the label, including  self-titled album (1991) and 1994 “Crusty Love” LP, before breaking up in 1997.
In their review of “Crusty Love” album All Music Guide concluded that the album is “yet another reason Texas should be its own nation”, since the band’s “campily gritty rock-outs are drenched in enough slop and snot and nastiness to have a serious appeal, even when the band is rehashing Cramps attitudes and rockabilly riffs.” Trouser Press commented “without losing its delusional down-and-out scariness, the music” on “Crusty Love” “has real force, comparable to Alice Donut and Cop Shoot Cop but infinitely more disturbing.”
The band reunited once again for a 2004 sold-out show at Room 710 club in Austin (that year also saw the reunion of Richard Smith former band Bontempi Bros). Their third (and final) full-length “Food Eater” is available only as mp3 download, since the band was unable to find a proper label to release the record.

Bastro was relatively short-lived, but memorable project of David Grubbs, Clark Johnson and John McEntire. They were a part of a network of like minded-bands, such as Squirrel Bait and Bitch Magnet.

Both Grubbs and Clark Johnson formed Bastro after the break up of Squirrel Bait in the late 80s, aided by drumming machine. Eventually, John McEntire replaced drumming machine and Clark Johnson was replaced by Bundy K. Brown. Grubbs abandoned the name Bastro in 1993 and started Gastr Del Sol with Jim O’Rourke. Bundy K. Brown and John McEntire both went on to play with Tortoise.
Much of their material was reissued by Blue Chopsticks and Drag City labels in 2005.

Dayton, Ohio based Brainiac were described in a thousand different ways – some called them Pixies of their day. Musically there’s little in common between those bands, but, indeed, there was the same creative spirit/impulse, at least in my opinion.
r-1089791-11912506861 Musically, Brainiac combined 70s Bowie with the sound of Moog synthesizer and pseudo-industrial/experimental tones. All in all, they managed to record plenty of albums, singles and compilation tracks, before their career was cut short due to Tim Taylor’s death in a car accident in 1997.
Consider this an odd or morbid coincidence, but shortly before his own death, Jeff Buckley talked about this story to his fans (http://www.pennyarcade.tv/friends/jeff_buckley.html):
“”At Jeff Buckley’s last gig at Barrister’s, a tiny hole in the wall Memphis bar on Monday June 26th, his first words on stage were “Dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, he’s fucking dead, the guy from Brainiac is fucking dead. I want this to mean something to every fucking one of you.” He began to play “Terminal Cancer” a song that includes the line “The world has eternal cancer”. “I guess that’s how the guy from Brainiac felt,” he continued as he segued into “Hallelujah” in requiem for Brainiac’s Tim Taylor who had died in a solo car crash. Over the next hour and a half, Jeff joked with the audience, pointing out that there was free red wine at the bar that he had brought in for the audience. “Free,” he said, “that’s spelled f-r-e-e.” He continued with the rest of his set which included “Corpus Christi Carol,” a song he hadn’t performed live in over two years. “Is that how you like your rock heroes – dead?” he demanded.
After the show a fan waiting to have Buckley autograph her copy of “Grace” asked how Taylor had died. “He blew up!,” he shouted as he grabbed a beer bottle off the bar, threw it across the room without breaking it and walked away to the jukebox on the other side of the room. Gayle Kelemen, creator of Jeff’s unofficial web page, who had introduced Jeff to Brainiac’s music and had been previously unaware of Taylor’s death, followed Buckley to the jukebox. “Are you upset about one of your favorite musicians dying?,” he snarled at her. “I hope you are, I hope you are because that’s why I create music.”

Wikipedia Page

Washington-based Karp never got much credit for their work and part of it can be attributed to constant comparisons to Melvins, to the point where many saw band as nothing more than Melvins clone. However, band lasted for quite a long time and after their dissolution, few members actually ended up playing in Melvins, as well as Big Business, with whom Melvins shared the stage.

Karp formed in Olympia, WA (Tumwater, WA, according to sources other than Wikipedia) in the early 90s. It consisted of Chris Smith, Jared Warren and Scott Jerrigan. Their first full-length was 1994 “Mustaches Wild” (preceded by “Freighty Cat” / “I’m Done” 7-inch singles). Due to personal conflicts they broke up in the late 90s due to personal conflicts, with members moving to a number of other projects/bands including The Whip, Melvins and Big Business.

Drummer Scott Jerrigan died in a boating accident in 2003, some time after finishing 7″ with his band The Whip, which also included Joe Preston.

Jared Warren formed The Tight Bros Way Back When and later joined Melvins/Big Business.

Fun Facts:

  • Their name comes from newsletter/zine that Chris Smith was working on in high school. It stands for Kill All Redneck Pricks.
