Jaye Bartell

Listen: Guest Mix by Shane Parish

Born in Massachusetts, Jaye Bartell moved to Asheville, NC, in the early 2000s where he began playing music among friends as a parallel activity to his work with poetry and other writing. Writing was his main focus for most of a decade; a time that involved constant traveling and moving around the U.S., mostly between North Carolina and the Pacific NW, where he lived on a small island in northern Washington. He released his first album, Feeling Better, Pilgrim, in 2008, after musician/writer Damian Weber taught him how to record. The album incorporated live incidental sounds (wind, chimes, traffic, birds), some of which were manipulated and processed as loops, but emphasized vocal melody and lyrics above all.

This duo, by way of Virginia and Eastern Kentucky, supplements their glorious harmonies and picking with visual art, puppets, and moving scrolls that completely rejiggers the way people experience mountain music. They’ll also lead a square dance during the day on Thursday as well as late-night jam session at the Jig and Reel, Knoxville’s home for Irish folk music.

DIVINE CIRCLES is USX violinist, Meghan Mulhearn’s eclectic solo endeavor. Notorious for pushing the limits of orthodox string-playing in an effort to explore the violin’s potential as an instrument far beyond traditional composition, Mulhearn often employs effects and electronics, novel plucking and strumming techniques and uses the violin as an actual vocal resonator.
