Video Premiere – James Wolf – Refuge

While he spent a career playing in bands, Arlington, VA based multi-instrumentalist James Wolf has also been steadily building a reputation as a solo artist. He debuted with 2013 Oh and last year saw the release of On Se Lève tape via Washington label Verses Records.

Refuge (from upcoming That EP on Verses), much like the rest of James solo work, straddles the line between classic and contemporary. A meditation on loss, time and memory, the song itself is characterized by a succession of mournful violin drone/loops morphing into one another, while accompanying video features a melange of figures, faces and objects appearing on a darkened background.

While “Refuge” could be described as slow and quiet, it never descends into monotony nor does it turns abrasive, which makes it stand in stark contrast to a lot of contemporary experimental music.
