Unsane Special – Pt.3 – Guilty By Association Mixtape

Unsane Special – Pt.3 – Guilty By Association Mixtape

Third part of a marathon dedicated to New York band Unsane and Wreck – their latest LP.

Collection of music from various side projects/other bands involving members of Unsane.

Cutthroats 9

The Cutthroats 9 was a band formed by Chris Spencer of Unsane when he moved to California after Unsane went on hiatus in 2000. Their first single “You Should Be Dead”/”Can’t Do a Thing” was released on Reptilian Records with Spencer on guitar/vocals, Mark Laramie (or Laramee) on bass and Billy Ropple on drums. Their first album was called The Cutthroats 9 and also came out on Man’s Ruin. The lineup for this recording featured Spencer on guitar/vocals, Unsane bassist Dave Curran, plus Mark Laramie and Will Carroll on guitar and drums respectively. They followed it up with a six song EP that came out on Reptilian Records with Chris (guitar), Mark (bass) and Will (drums).

J.J. Paradise Players Club

Players Club got together in Brooklyn, 1999. Each of the four guys were playing in other bands—guitarist Joel Hamilton in Shiner and Glazed Baby; bassist Dave Curran in Unsane; drummer and namesake Jim J. Paradise in Kill Van Kull with singer Cooper. (Those are the main bands—you’ll also find such bands as Book of Knots, Get On Get On, Made Out Babies, Die 116 and Glazed Baby on their resumes).

Pigs

When Unsane bassist Dave Curran started writing songs on guitar with drummer Jim Paradise (Player’s Club, Freshkills, Hellno) the name they tossed out for their fledgling project was simple: PIGS. “We figured it was short enough that press and promoters couldn’t fuck it up.” Producer Andrew Schneider (Cave In, Converge, Made Out of Babies, Unsane, Keelhaul) was invited to fill-in on bass for a couple of shows and, much to their delight, has refused to leave.

Celan

Celan is the brainchild of Ari Benjamin Meyers (Einsturzende Neubauten, Redux Orchestra) and Chris Spencer (of Unsane fame). They met in Berlin during an Unsane tour and immediately got interest in creating a project to combine and meld their completely different backgrounds (classical, avant garde, industrial, noise and hardcore). Phil Roeder, Franz Xavier (ex-members of flu. ID) and Niko Wenner (guitarist extraordinaire from OXBOW) completed the line-up that recorded the debut album Halo in 2009.
